Where :Hohensalzburg, Salzburg
There are many things to visit in Salzburg, we mistakenly booked one night before moving to our next destination. When you arrive in the city of Salzburg, do not miss the imposing fortress. Hohensalzburg is located atop the hill of Festungsberg. According to Wikipedia, the fort was erected at the behest of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg with a length of 250 m (820 ft) and a width of 150 m (490 ft). It is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Additionally, Hohensalzburg Fortress is situated at an altitude of 506 m.
As many other Forts around the world, Hohensalzburg Fortress was constructed to solve invasion problems and protect the city. Today, it’s the most touristic destination in Salzburg. The entrance fee is paid at the bottom of the hill, where the Funicular is located. As soon as you get at the top, you will have a perfect view from Salzburg city. Inside the Fort, is the Golden Chamber which is the most magnificently furnished room of the princely chambers. Make sure to check the interesting and cool exposition as the Marionette Museum where you can have some fun role playing.
So, how much does it cost ? Well, we paid our entrance fee at the base of the hill, which included the funicular ride. It was around 15 euros (or $22 for us Canadians), please consult the website in advance as prices may fluctuate. We found it reasonably priced for the history, beautiful palace and city views.

Recommend: Yes, you will get amazing city views. Go back in time with the Fortress history and little village up there!
Tips:
- If you can spend a little more than one day at Salzburg city we think it’s worth. Unfortunately we had planned less than one day and one night in the city and we thought that was not enough. You will spend a couple of hours alone in the Fortress.
- Comfortable shoes is the best option to walk in the old town.
