Where : Great Synagogue, Pilsen
Discovering Great Synagogue - Velká synagoga
We took a day trip to Pilsen, a small city in Czech Republic approximately 1 hour by train from Prague. Our day started with the Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour, you can check the review here - Pilsner Urquell brewery. When the tour finished, we decided to stay the afternoon to visit the city.
Prior to our visit, we only knew about the brewery, so we were happy when we discovered the Great Synagogue.
2nd Largest in Europe
According to Wikipedia, the synagogue is the second largest in Europe. It seemed like it was occupied by Nazi during WWII, and later restored (from 1995 to 1998). Personally, it was the first we visited a synagogue. We were surprised with the architecture and beauty.
Inside the hallways, was an exhibition of pictures along the corridors, as you will see in our pictures. We're not sure if the exhibition is permanent, but it was nice to discover inside peacefully.
Do we recommend ?
We had no idea what to expect because we had never visited a synagogue before. It’s an interesting place to discover, for the structure and history. There is no entrance fee and it’s an interesting place to visit, as a result, we recommend a visit !
