Discovering Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme, Salzburg

Where : Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme Discovering Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme. We quickly visited the beautiful ‘Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme’ square as we left the Salzburg Cathedral.  Actually, it’s also quite close to Residenzplatz and Mozartplatz, so feel free to check these out also. A few things make this square stand out from the rest.  First of all, there is an amazing view from the “Neptune and sea-steed” fountain.  Secondly, there’s a really picturesque view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and mountains in the background.  ‘It felt like a view out of a magazine!’  Lastly, you’ll surely notice ‘Sphaera’ which is a 9 meter high ’emotionless man’ on top of a golden sphere.  The statue at the top gave us the impression he was gazing at

Discovering Mozartplatz, Salzburg

Salzburg old town and Mozartplatz were both undergoing some construction when we visited in May of 2017. The square has some restaurants, cafes, a touristic office information where you can get some tips on where to visit.   According to one of our pictures, the number 17 on the HopOn HopOff of Old Town tour. The main attraction here is the Mozart Monument, hence the name of the square. Although not 100% maintained, the statue looked nice with flower decorations.  The big kicker is that certain locals don’t like the monument because they say the statue doesn’t look like with the real Mozart. We recommend a quick visit since Mozartplatz is just next to the Residenz square.  Otherwise, there’s just

Discovering Residenzplatz, Salzburg

Where : Residenzplatz, Salzburg  When visiting Salzburg, consider visiting Residenzplatz.  Which is one of the famous squares to visit in the Old Town.  This is exactly where the residence building of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg and the Salzburg Cathedral are located. This is a great location to visit, here’s why. First, the architecture and history bring charm to the square.  Second, the Residenz Fountain is considered one of the most significant baroque monuments in Europe.  The Italian sculptor, Tommaso di Garone is the craftsman behind it all. Above all, the fountain is renown and famous for another reason.  That’s because it was one of the filming location for the famous movie “The Sound of Music”!  You might have heard of it.

Discovering Salzburg Cathedral

Where : Salzburg Cathedral We stopped at the Salzburg Cathedral on our way to Hohensalzburg.  This Cathedral was built around the 17th century and has a beautiful Baroque style.  Seems like this is Serge’s idea of most beautiful church he’s visited in Europe. You will find the Cathedral in the Old Town at the end of Getreidegasse or on the way to Hohensalzburg.  This area is quite touristic and a great place to take crafty pictures.  Like most churches in Europe, there is no need to pay to enter.  You can leave a donation if you want to contribute to the upkeep and maintenance. The church is dedicated to Saint Rupert and Saint Virgil, both patron saints of the city

Discovering Getreidegasse, Salzburg

Where : Getreidegasse, Salzburg We really enjoyed our stroll down Getreidegasse, located int the historic old town.  Its by far one of the most visited and busiest streets in the city.  It boasts many souvenir shops, from chocolates to Mozart related gadgets, to chic stores like Louis Vuitton.  However, all shops have one thing in common.  They all have a rich, elegant iron guild sign with their store names.  This we found out, is mandatory! According to Wikipedia, Getreidegasse is also the birthplace of Worfgang Amadeus Mozart.  He lived at No. 9 until the age of 17.  This is why you will find yourself passing in front of Mozart gift shops, Mozart Café, Mozart Museum and alas his monument. The main

Discovering Mirabell gardens, Salzburg

Where : Mirabell gardens, Salzburg If you have the impression that Salzburg is a small city, you are correct in thinking so.  Consider this, we walked 5 min from the train station to our hotel and another 12 minutes to Mirabell Palace.  Continuing on this path will get you to the Historic town, in approximately 20 minutes.  It’s not the smallest city we’ve visited and we regret not booking at least 2 nights in Salzburg. If you are used to discovering the cities by foot, you will love Salzburg!  It’s quite easy to walk from one monument or landmark to another.  There is an abundance of Hop on Hop off tours if you prefer motorized or organized tours.  Actually, from what
